When does Soccer Season start?
Fall registration usually starts late August through the beginning of September.
Spaces are limited so try to register on time to ensure a spot. When does the
fall season begin? The season usually begins the 3rd week of September and
ends mid-November.
When will I know about my child’s practice
schedule?
The team coach(es) will contact the designated contact approximately one to two weeks
before the season begins. The teams will have the opportunity to practice for
two weeks prior to their first game. Schedules will be posted 10-12 days before
the first play date.
Where are the soccer games played?
This varies by teams. Please check the game schedules given to you by the coach and Club website under “Field Locations”.
What days are games played?
The majority of games are held on Saturdays. However, there will be times when games
will be played during the evening on weekdays.
What equipment does my child need?
All players must purchase a jersey, a pair of black shorts, socks, shin guards, cleats and a soccer ball (see proper ball size listed below). It is mandatory that shin guards be worn at all
games and practices (shin guards are to be worn under the socks during the game, but may be worn over socks during practice). The Club highly recommends the purchase of an age appropriate sized ball.

Your child’s team is determined by the grade your child is. The teams are as follows: PeeWees
(pre-K and kindergarten). 1/2 Team, 3/4 Team, 5/6 Team and 7/8 Team.
Can my child play up/down from their age group?
To allow children to participate with their classmates or to facilitate those who may be more
physically mature for their age, Southern Maryland Youth Soccer Association (SMCYA) allows any player who desires to play up one age group to do so by selecting that on their registration. For the safety and enjoyment of all of our participants, players are not allowed to play up more than one year without approval from the board. Please be aware, Southern Maryland Youth Soccer
Association (SMCYA) prohibits children from playing in a team younger than their own grade level (i.e., a 2nd grader may not play for peewees but may play on a 3/4 team).
Do I have to go to St. Columba School to participate?
Absolutely not! Many players participate are from neighboring schools.
How will I know if practices/games are cancelled due to weather?
The Club Web site posts a cancellation on the Home Page. "Follow us" on twitter @stcsoccer for instant updates to your cell phone. “Like Us” on Face book at St. Columba Club for Club messages. Please be aware that the referee always has the final say as to whether a game will be played once teams are at the field. Coaches and Team Parents also do their best to get word to parents as quickly as possible so check your e-mail frequently.
Are there family discounts?
Yes, there is a $15 discount for the second child and more for the third child.
Who are the board members? How do I become one?
Board members are volunteer parents of players. The Board Members meet monthly. The Club is operated by a Board of Directors elected annually during our spring banquet. The board members list on our website under About Us.
Does the Club need volunteers?
The Club functions solely on volunteers. Teams need team parents; fundraisers coordinators and concession VIRTUS training.
Is the Club a non-profit organization?
Yes, the Club is a 501(c)3 corporation.
What is the difference between The Club and CYO Soccer?
The Club is primarily meant to be a fun recreational outlet for players. Scores and standings are not recorded nor maintained by leagues. All players are, generally, required to play at least 50% of each game. The CYO Soccer is a more competitive format. The primary objectives of the Club teams are to have fun and win games. Individual playing time varies. Scores and team standings are maintained throughout the season. CYO season usually concludes with a regional, state or national tournament.
Can I become a coach?
Yes! Coaching in the Club is as fun and rewarding as playing, and a soccer background is unnecessary. We will provide you with the information you need to make recreation soccer a fun and rewarding experience for every child! You must be VIRTUS trained to coach but you will receive service hours for your participation. If interested, please send an email to [email protected].
How do I become a referee?
No experience is necessary. We provide the training, uniforms, and mentoring at no cost to you. The referee clinics are hosted by Maryland Soccer Referees throughout the year. Locate a schedule of clinics at the Maryland Soccer Referees. The Maryland State Instructional Staff recommends that students be at least 13. Once you have received your referee certificate, you will be required to referee at least 4 games.
